More Woodturning About Us

About Fred Holder, Editor and Publisher
More Woodturning Magazine
Fred Holder is the Editor and Publisher of More Woodturning magazine. He lives in Snohomish, Washington, USA with his wife, Mildred, and has been turning wood since 1988. He specializes in hand thread chasing and making the Chinese Ball, however, he continues to experiment with different techniques.
Fred has done quite a bit of segmented work; multi-centered work (using the Robert Sorby Eccentric Chuck and an Escoulin type ball and socket chuck); bowls both regular shaped and natural edge; making regular balls; making the Chinese Ball; hand chasing of threads for boxes, walking stick joins, or any place where a threaded joint is needed; and many other techniques. Fred and Mildred have three wood lathes: a Nova DVR 3000, a Vicmarc VL100 evs, and a Oneway 1018, plus a homemade Rose Engine lathe for ornamental turning.
Fred: The Demonstrator
Fred has extensive demonstration experience. Since 1996, he has demonstrated woodturning at numerous Northwest Chapters of the AAW and at various events around the globe, including:
- The Fraser Valley Woodturning Guild (Canada)
- The Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild (Canada)
- The American Association of Woodturners Annual Symposium
- The annual Woodcarvers Show in Monroe, Washington (by invitation)
- The Craft Supplies LTD shows in England and in Wales
Fred has also performed demonstrations in New Zealand, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, and on an 11-day Norwegian Woodturning Cruise.
Fred and Mildred started a Collaborative Group in March 2007, which has settled down with seven members that meet at their home on a monthly basis. The group takes a similar piece (or pieces) of wood and produces something for each meeting. Its purpose is to stimulate creativity and prompt discussions – around the dining table – on various woodturning topics. Occasionally, the group adjourns to the shop for a demonstration of some technique.
Fred: The Writer
Fred is also a writer and has written several articles for American Woodturner. Two of those articles were reprinted in "American Woodturner's Techniques & Projects Booklet." Fred wrote the "Letter from America" column for Woodturning magazine (in England) for over six years. He has also written a number of feature stories for Woodturning magazine, including one on thread chasing, "Getting the Thread," July 1997 issue, which was reprinted in "Useful Techniques for Woodturners," and one on making the Chinese Ball. He was the Projects Writer for NZ Woodturner for a couple of years. And he has also written a large number of articles for More Woodturning, which he has edited and published since October 1996.
Fred has had two books published by GMC Publications in English. "Making Screw Threads in Wood" was published in June 2001 and "A Guide to Work-Holding on the Lathe" was published in 2004. In 2002, Fred self-published another book titled, "Making the Chinese Ball or 5 Concentric Spheres." His fourth book, “The Woodturners FAQ Book,” was published by Linden Pulishing in in June of 2007.
Most recently, Fred has written another book titled, “The Turning Process.” This book is distributed electronically, and is also available on his “Two Books in One” CD-ROM, which also contains the latest version of his “Making the Chinese Ball” book.
