A Gallery of Ideas

Night Light in the form of a Lighthouse made by Fred Holder, Editor and Publisher of More Woodturning.

I titled this piece "A Light in the Night" because that is what it is, a night light and it depicts a lighthouse which was the light in the night that warned mariners off of dangerous coastal areas. The piece is of segmented construction with the tower being constructed of nine rings each having 8 segments, 7 red heart and one of ziricote. The rings were shifted as they were stacked so that the black segment moved around the tower a full turn with the nine rings. The top piece is segmented but made from ziricote and brass rods. The top screws onto the tower with hand chased 11 tpi threads cut in inserts of lignum viate and boxwood. To depict the actual mounting of a lighthouse, a slice of manzanita root burl was selected. The structure was screwed together so that it could be taken apart for servicing of the electrical components should they fail in use. Finish on the lighthouse was wax. Finish on the base was Durathane, this combination of finishes gave about the same amount of shine to all parts. Both the top and bottom of the base was turned to make them parallel.

My daughter, Nancy, who collects lighthouses was very pleased to add this lighthouse night light to her collection.
